AI expense tracker for Android: what the AI actually does

AI in an expense tracker covers very different things, from reading a receipt to changing your budget. Here is what each one means, what to check before you turn it on, and how it works in Clove Ai on Android.

Four things "AI" can mean in a tracker

The label is used loosely, so it helps to separate the jobs. In an expense tracker the AI usually does one or more of these.

  • Parsing: you type "two coffees 8k and a ride home 25k" and it becomes three entries with amounts and categories.
  • Reading: you photograph a receipt and it reads the total.
  • Answering: you ask "where did my money go this month?" and it replies from your totals.
  • Acting: you ask it to add an expense, change a budget or fix a mistake, and it does.

What to check before you turn it on

Parsing and reading are low risk: they only turn your input into entries, and you see the result. Answering and acting deserve more attention, because they depend on how well the answer is grounded and on whether you can reverse a change.

  • Is the answer computed from your stored totals, or generated from a guess? Totals should come from your data.
  • Can you undo what the AI changed? Every AI action should be an ordinary entry you can see and remove.
  • Does it work with the AI switched off? Manual entry, budgets and charts should not depend on it.
  • Where does the data go, and is it used to train anyone's model?
  • Is there a limit on the free plan, and what happens when you reach it?

How the AI works in Clove Ai

AI features are off until you turn them on, and nothing is sent to an AI provider before then. With them on, you can write expenses in plain words, scan receipts, and chat with the money coach. The coach answers from totals computed from your own expenses and can add or edit expenses and budgets when you ask. Every change it makes is a normal entry in your history, and you can undo it.

What you type into chat, the receipt images you scan and a summary of your spending totals are sent to a third-party AI provider in the United States to produce the answer. They are not used to train anyone's model. The Privacy Policy names the provider and the details.

If you turn the AI off, you lose the chat, the plain-words entry and the receipt scan. Manual entry, budgets, charts and reports keep working as before.

Limits to know about

On the free Basic plan, AI chat and receipt scanning run on a daily allowance rather than being unlimited. Pro raises the allowance. The AI will sometimes misread a blurred receipt or pick a category you disagree with, which is why the result is shown to you before it is saved and why the history lets you correct it.

On Android specifically

The Android app has home-screen widgets and runs on Android 7.0 and newer. It is a 23 MB download. Right now it installs from an APK on the download page; a Google Play listing is planned but not live, and when it arrives, moving to it will mean removing the APK version first because the two are signed with different keys.

You can also use Clove Ai in any browser with the same account, and what you log appears on both. There is no iPhone app yet.

Is it for you

If you want automatic tracking without lifting a finger, a bank-linked tracker is a better fit than Clove Ai, because Clove never connects to your bank. If you would rather keep your bank out of it and want entry to be quick and the AI to be your choice, this is the use case it was built for.
