Daily rings: finish your money day without streak pressure

A large ring that is mostly filled, standing for a daily goal that is nearly closed72

Daily rings in Clove Ai, the expense tracker app, are three small goals for the day: log, keep within your allowance, and check what Clove Ai says. Each closes as you go. There is no count of days in a row, so missing a day costs nothing.

Most habit apps lean on streaks: miss one day and the number resets to zero. For money tracking that is a poor fit, because the point is an accurate picture, not a perfect record. Clove Ai replaced the streak with three rings that close once a day and never count days in a row. This post explains what each ring needs and what the design leaves out on purpose.

Three rings labelled Log, Keep and Check, two of them closed and one part way, with a note that there is no count of days in a rowLogAny expense, or "Spent nothing"KeepSpend within the allowanceCheckRead the take, or clear a MoveA ring closes once a day. No count of days in a row.
Three rings a day. Each closes once; none counts consecutive days.

The three rings

What closes each ring
RingWhat it asksWhat closes it
LogDid you record your money today?Any expense logged for the day (income counts too), or one tap on "Spent nothing today"
KeepDid you stay within the day's allowance?Spending against what you can spend today stays within it
CheckDid you look at what Clove Ai says?Reading Clove's take on Home, or clearing one of the Move cards

Log: a record, even of nothing

The Log ring closes the moment you record anything. A zero-spend day is still a day, so there is a "Spent nothing today" button; without it, a quiet day would look like a forgotten day. Logging is also the part everything else depends on: the Cashflow Score and the allowance are only as good as the records behind them. Track expenses by typing, talking or scanning a receipt shows the quickest ways.

Keep: spending against the allowance

The Keep ring compares what you have spent today with your allowance for the day, which Clove Ai works out from your income, bills and the days left. Staying within it closes the ring. Going over draws the ring hollow rather than "broken": it is information, not a penalty. If Clove Ai has no honest number yet, for example because no income is recorded, the Keep ring is skipped instead of failed.

Check: look at the picture

The Check ring closes when you read the short written take about your own figures on Home, or when you clear a Move card, which is a small suggested action. It rewards looking at the numbers, not hitting them. The notes are written at most once a day from totals computed from your records.

Why there is no streak

  • A streak punishes the day you are ill, travelling or simply busy, and that is when you most need an app that does not make you feel behind.
  • It rewards the act of opening the app, not the quality of your records.
  • It tempts people to log something meaningless to protect the number.

Closed days are still counted in a period, for example "five closed days this week", but nothing in Clove Ai says how many days in a row. A missed day costs nothing, and the next day starts clean.

The weekly rating, in plain words

Each finished week, Clove Ai rates how it went, using your pace against the plan, how many days you closed and how many days you logged. The rating does not reset to zero when you miss days. It moves a little up or down, so a bad week is a dip, not a collapse. You can see it on the Progress screen along with a month calendar of closed days.

Where Clove Ai is not the best fit

If you want a streak counter, public badges or a game, Clove Ai is not that: streaks and gems were removed. It is also paid only ($2.99 a month or $29.99 a year, with a 7-day trial on the yearly plan), Android only for now and has no bank connection, so you enter your own spending. A realistic day

Say you buy lunch and a ride. You tell Clove Ai in one sentence, and the Log ring closes. Later you open Home, glance at the take and the Check ring closes. You stayed under the day's allowance, so Keep closes too. That is a closed day, and it took about a minute. On a day you forget, nothing is lost; add the missing lines tomorrow and the picture is whole again. The related post on what a Cashflow Score is explains the number the rings sit beside.

Questions and answers

Does Clove Ai have streaks?

No. Streaks and gems were removed. Daily rings close once a day, and nothing counts days in a row, so a missed day costs nothing.

What happens if I miss a day?

Nothing is lost. Add the missing expenses later and your records are complete. The weekly rating moves a little but does not reset.

What if I spent nothing today?

Tap "Spent nothing today". That closes the Log ring, so a quiet day is not mistaken for a forgotten one.

Why is my Keep ring not available?

Keep needs an honest allowance for the day. Until Clove Ai has your income and some records, it skips Keep rather than failing it.
