Budget by pay cycle instead of the calendar month

Budgeting by pay cycle means your budget month runs from one payday to the next instead of from the 1st to the 31st. Clove Ai, the expense tracker app, uses your payday to start each cycle, so the pace, the budget and the Cashflow Score match when your money really arrives.
Most people are not paid on the 1st. If your salary lands on the 25th, the calendar month cuts your real month in two: the last week of one cycle and the first three weeks of the next. Numbers for "this month" then mix money from two different paychecks. This post shows the problem with a worked example and how Clove Ai handles it.
The problem with calendar months
Say you are paid IDR 6,000,000 on the 25th and today is the 28th. Your calendar-month view sees 28 days gone, 3,900,000 spent so far and 2,100,000 left for the last four days. But 3,450,000 of that spending came before payday and was paid from the previous salary. The view suggests you can spend 525,000 a day, which is wrong.
| Calendar month | Pay cycle from the 25th | |
|---|---|---|
| Days gone / days left | 28 gone, 4 left | 4 gone, 28 left |
| Income counted | 6,000,000 | 6,000,000 |
| Spending counted | 3,900,000 (3,450,000 was before payday) | 450,000 |
| Bills still to pay | Not separated | 2,200,000 |
| Money left | 2,100,000 | 3,350,000 |
| Per day to the next payday | 525,000 | About 119,600 |
The pay-cycle view counts only what you spent since payday, subtracts the bills still to come, and divides what is left by the days until the next payday, today included. 3,350,000 divided by 28 days is about 119,600 a day. That is the number you can plan around.
How Clove Ai sets your cycle
- You tell Clove Ai your payday, the day of the month your pay arrives, in the set-up questions or your money profile.
- A cycle runs from the last payday on or before today to the next one. If your payday is the 31st, a shorter month uses its last day.
- The pace, the daily allowance, the safe-to-spend number and the Cashflow Score are all measured over that cycle. What a Cashflow Score is and how to improve it explains the five parts.
- If your pay varies, you can say so, and Clove Ai falls back to calendar months.
What to set up
- Enter the payday and your usual income.
- List the fixed bills that come out each cycle, such as rent and subscriptions.
- Log spending as it happens, by typing, talking or scanning.
- Check the daily number once a day. It moves as you log, so a high day makes tomorrow smaller.
Mistakes that skew the numbers
- Setting the wrong payday. If your salary lands on the 25th but you enter the 1st, every number is measured over the wrong stretch.
- Forgetting to list a bill that falls before the next payday. The money left looks bigger than it is until the bill is paid.
- Logging your salary late. Until something is logged this cycle, Clove Ai uses the income you said to expect; once your pay is logged it uses that instead.
- Treating one high day as a failure. The daily number is a pace, so a big purchase lowers the following days rather than ending the cycle.
When a calendar month is fine
If you are paid on the 1st, or your income is irregular, the calendar month is the right frame and the two views are the same. Pay-cycle budgeting also needs honest logging: the numbers are only as good as the records. Track expenses by typing, talking or scanning a receipt shows the quickest ways to keep them current.
Where Clove Ai is not the best fit
Clove Ai is paid ($2.99 a month or $29.99 a year, with a 7-day trial on the yearly plan), Android only for now and has no bank connection, so your bills and income must be entered by you. If you want everything pulled from the bank, a bank-linked app may suit you better; see Best AI expense tracker apps in 2026.

Questions and answers
What is a pay cycle?
The stretch of days from one payday to the next. If you are paid on the 25th, your cycle runs from the 25th of one month to the 24th of the next.
What if I am paid on the 31st?
In months with fewer days, Clove Ai uses the last day of the month as your payday.
What if my income is irregular?
Tell Clove Ai your pay varies and it uses calendar months instead, so the pace and score still work.
Does the pay cycle change the Cashflow Score?
Yes. The score measures your savings rate, pace, fixed costs, stability and buffer over the current cycle, not the calendar month.
